Zakir Ahmedin is an Atlanta native majoring in biomedical engineering. He selected his major because of his interests in biology and design and the number of research opportunities available for students. On campus, he is president of the Minority Association of Premedical Students (MAPS) and a member of Tau Beta Pi.
Valentina Celis is from South Florida, but her family is originally from Bogotá, Colombia. On campus, she is involved as an executive board member for the Society of Hispanic Engineers (SHPE), a Civil Engineering Ambassador, and CEED’s Peer to Peer Mentorship program. She has been a summer intern at Colliers Engineering and Design, WSP, and AECOM. Through these experiences, she satisfied her desire to learn more about civil engineering, which she pursued as a career for its interdisciplinary studies.
Max Mateer is from Pensacola Beach, Florida, and is majoring in nuclear and radiological engineering because he is passionate about fusion energy and solving the world’s climate crisis. On campus, he is a brother at the Delta Chi Fraternity, where he is the DEI chair. Additionally, he works in a science fiction research lab in the School of Literature, Media, and Communication.
Sebastián Negrón Collazo is pursuing a major in electrical engineering, driven by his passion for the field and a commitment to solve the persistent issues in Puerto Rico’s electrical system. He aims to leverage his expertise to launch a renewable energy company focused on innovative and sustainable solutions. Currently, he is a field electrical engineer intern at ExxonMobil in Houston, Texas.
Sofia Varmeziar is an industrial engineering major from Peachtree City, Georgia. On campus, she is involved in Greek life and a member of the Ramblin’ Reck Club, PARS, and Wreck Camp. She chose industrial engineering because she loves math, statistics, and problem solving.
Sierra Yim is from Newmarket, New Hampshire, and studies materials science and engineering. Her interest in materials stemmed from advancements in new materials for nuclear fusion reactors. Her coursework at Georgia Tech has encouraged her to explore different areas of materials science through the Research Scholars program and internships at Carbon Inc. and GE Aerospace. Currently, she is the COO of The MILL makerspace and is also a member of the MSE Ambassadors program and the Metals Printing Learning & Discovery Team at The MILL.
